Niacinamide for Hair: Benefits for the Scalp and Hair Density

Що таке ніацинамід і чому він корисний для вашого волосся

A 2022 study found that a shampoo containing 0.1% niacinamide was associated with a significant increase in hair density, approximately 17.8%, compared with placebo.

What is niacinamide? Niacinamide, also known as nicotinamide, is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. It plays an important role in the metabolism of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates and in the production of NAD and NADP, which support cellular energy processes.

For the scalp and hair, several mechanisms are of interest:

  • supporting the skin barrier and helping reduce transepidermal water loss, which is important for scalp comfort;
  • soothing properties and support for balanced sebum production;
  • potential support for hair follicles by helping limit oxidative stress and influencing the transition into the catagen, or resting, phase.

From a scientific perspective, niacinamide therefore has potential as a supportive ingredient for scalp and hair health.

Why a gentle, environmentally conscious shampoo makes sense

In hair care, an environmentally conscious formula generally means a focus on gentle cleansing agents, carefully selected ingredients, and packaging with a lower environmental impact.

For the scalp, a gentle formula may offer several advantages:

  • less aggressive cleansing and a lower risk of dryness or discomfort;
  • better support for a balanced scalp environment;
  • less buildup from unnecessarily heavy formula components.

When a gentle shampoo also contains a functional ingredient such as niacinamide, it combines everyday cleansing with targeted scalp care.

The Mesonia hair-care range includes the Eco Shampoo for Dry, Brittle Hair with Swiss Niacinamide and Aloe. Its sulfate-free cleansing system is designed for damaged hair and creates a soft, creamy foam. Sage extract helps cleanse the hair and soothe the scalp, while nettle extract supports a healthy-looking scalp and hair.

How niacinamide supports the scalp and hair

1. Supporting the scalp barrier

Niacinamide supports the production of skin lipids and the normal function of the protective barrier. A more stable barrier retains moisture more effectively and can be less prone to dryness, visible redness, itching, and sebum imbalance.

2. Antioxidant and soothing support

Research suggests that niacinamide may affect DKK-1, a signalling protein associated with follicle apoptosis and progression toward the catagen phase. Oxidative stress and inflammation can also affect follicles and surrounding tissues, so ingredients that support the scalp’s protective processes may be useful in a comprehensive routine.

3. Hair cycle and the appearance of density

In a 24-week clinical study, a shampoo containing 0.1% niacinamide together with salicylic acid and panthenol was associated with an approximately 17.8% increase in hair count in the crown area.

Another study involving niacinamide derivatives in women with female-pattern hair loss reported a statistically significant improvement in the appearance of hair fullness after six months.

Niacinamide is not a medicine and should not be expected to produce dramatic hair growth on its own. Its value lies in supporting a comfortable, balanced scalp as part of a consistent hair-care routine.

No shampoo can solve every hair concern overnight. However, gentle cleansing and well-chosen active ingredients are a sensible step toward a healthier scalp, which provides the foundation for stronger, fuller-looking hair.
